SOMMER twist XL is an extremely powerful 24V heavy-duty swing gate motor engineered for oversized residential, commercial and industrial swing gates. SOMMER specifies the twist XL for gate leaves weighing up to 1,100 kg or measuring up to 7 metres wide, depending on the gate dimensions, construction, filling, wind load and installation conditions.

With a maximum 4,500 N pulling and pushing force, 20 mm/s maximum thrust speed, up to 110° opening angle and 40% S3 duty cycle, the twist XL is designed for demanding automatic swing gate applications requiring substantially more capacity than standard residential gate operators.

1100 KG Heavy-Duty Swing Gate Motor

The SOMMER twist XL is designed for extremely heavy swing gate applications. With a maximum specified gate leaf weight of up to 1,100 kg, it provides considerably greater capacity than standard residential swing gate operators.

This makes the twist XL suitable for large villa entrances, commercial properties, industrial facilities, warehouses, compounds and other heavy automatic swing gates when correctly sized and installed.

For Swing Gate Leaves Up to 7 Metres

SOMMER specifies the twist XL for compatible swing gate leaves measuring up to 7 metres wide. This exceptionally large operating range makes it suitable for oversized entrances where conventional swing gate operators are not sufficient.

The maximum permissible gate weight depends on the leaf width, height, construction, filling, wind exposure and installation geometry. The 1,100 kg and 7 m specifications should not automatically be combined for every installation.

Powerful 4,500 N Gate Operator

The twist XL provides a maximum 4,500 N pulling and pushing force with a nominal pulling force of 1,500 N.

This high actuator force provides the performance required for large and heavy swing gates while the SOMMER control system manages the gate movement electronically.

24V DC Heavy-Duty Gate Automation

The SOMMER twist XL uses a 24V DC motor controlled through the dedicated SOMMER control unit. The complete automation system operates from a 220–240V AC, 50–60 Hz mains supply.

The 24V drive system enables precise electronic gate control together with compatible safety devices, access-control equipment and radio accessories.

450 mm Operator Travel

The twist XL provides a 450 mm travel or movement range. Correct mounting dimensions are essential for achieving the required opening angle, gate movement and mechanical leverage.

The gate post, hinge position, mounting brackets and required opening angle should therefore be measured before installation.

Up to 110° Opening Angle

SOMMER specifies a maximum gate opening angle of up to 110° for the twist XL. The actual opening angle depends on the installation geometry and mounting dimensions.

Electronic Force Monitoring

The twist XL uses electronic force monitoring as part of the automatic gate control system. The operator can respond to abnormal resistance during gate movement according to the programmed settings.

Photocells, safety edges and other appropriate protective devices should also be installed according to the gate design and applicable safety requirements.

Automatic Closing Function

The compatible twist XL control unit supports automatic closing. When correctly programmed, the automatic gate can close after a predefined period.

Automatic closing should only be activated when the entrance has the required safety equipment and the complete system has been correctly tested.

Pedestrian Opening Function

The twist XL control system supports a pedestrian gate function, allowing partial or selected gate operation for pedestrian access without requiring the entire entrance to be opened.

Outward-Opening Swing Gates

With appropriate special fittings, the SOMMER twist XL can also be installed on suitable outward-opening swing gates.

Outward-opening installations require different mounting geometry, so the pillar dimensions, hinge position and available space should be checked before selecting the fittings.

SOMMER twist XL Control Unit

The current SOMMER twist XL control unit, article S11526-00001, uses the DTA-1 control system in an IP65 housing measuring approximately 250 × 175 × 75 mm.

The control unit is supplied from 230V and controls compatible 24V SOMMER swing gate operators. It provides extensive programming options for gate movement, safety and access-control functions.

SOMloq2 868.95 MHz Radio Receiver

The current twist XL control unit includes a pluggable SOMup4 S2 radio receiver operating at 868.95 MHz using SOMloq2 technology.

The receiver provides 40 radio memory positions. An optional SOMMER Memo module can expand the capacity to approximately 450 radio commands.

SOMMER Pearl Vibe Remote Control

The current twist XL control-unit package includes a SOMMER Pearl Vibe 4-command handheld transmitter with vibration feedback.

Additional compatible SOMloq2 remote controls can be programmed according to the available receiver memory.

How to Select the Correct SOMMER twist XL

Do not select the twist XL using gate weight alone. For an oversized swing gate, the installer should consider the weight, width and height of each leaf, gate filling, wind exposure, hinge condition, gate inclination, pillar dimensions, opening angle, mounting geometry and operating frequency.

The maximum specifications of 1,100 kg and 7 metres represent the operating limits of the twist XL range and should not automatically be interpreted as a 1,100 kg × 7 m gate specification.
