FAAC XP 20D is a pair of professional adjustable infrared photocell safety sensors designed for automatic gate and access automation systems. The XP 20D consists of a transmitter and modulated infrared receiver that create a safety beam across the gate entrance with a nominal operating range of up to 20 metres.

Designed for flexible wall-mounted installation, the FAAC XP 20D features 180° horizontal adjustment (-90° to +90°) together with vertical optical self-alignment. This makes accurate beam alignment easier even where the two photocells cannot be installed perfectly opposite each other.

FAAC XP 20D Technical Specifications

20 Metre Automatic Gate Safety Photocell

The FAAC XP 20D creates a modulated infrared beam between the transmitter and receiver with a nominal distance of up to 20 metres. When a vehicle, person or other obstacle interrupts the infrared beam, the status of the receiver changes and sends a safety signal to the connected gate automation controller.

The exact response of the automatic gate depends on the control board programming. For example, interruption of the photocell beam during closing can be configured to stop or reopen the gate on compatible FAAC automation systems.

180° Adjustable Photocell

One of the main advantages of the FAAC XP 20D is its wide 180° horizontal adjustment. The internal optical assembly can be mechanically adjusted from -90° to +90°, making it much easier to align the transmitter and receiver on different gate pillars or walls.

This flexibility is particularly useful where the mounting surfaces are angled or where the photocells cannot be positioned directly opposite each other.

Vertical Optical Self-Alignment

In addition to horizontal adjustment, the XP 20D provides vertical optical self-alignment. FAAC specifies approximately ±7° self-alignment at 20 metres and up to ±13.5° at 5 metres.

This feature is useful where the entrance surface is uneven or where the transmitter and receiver are installed at slightly different vertical positions.

Fast 13ms Obstacle Detection

The FAAC XP 20D has a specified obstacle detection time of approximately 13 milliseconds. When the infrared beam is interrupted, the receiver rapidly changes the state of its safety output so that the compatible automation controller can respond according to its programmed safety logic.

IP54 Protection for Outdoor Installation

The XP 20D enclosure has an IP54 protection rating, providing protection suitable for normal outdoor gate automation installations when the photocells are correctly installed.

FAAC uses a moulded casing seal designed to maintain the protection of the photocell enclosure and reduce problems caused by incorrectly positioned removable seals.

Compact Wall-Mounted Design

With dimensions of approximately 41 × 130 × 42 mm, the FAAC XP 20D has a slim, compact profile suitable for installation on gate pillars, walls and dedicated photocell posts.

Cable entry can be arranged according to the installation requirements, helping provide a clean professional appearance.

FAAC XP 20D for Sliding Gates

The XP 20D can be used as a safety accessory with compatible FAAC sliding gate automation systems. The photocells are typically installed across the vehicle entrance to detect an obstacle while the automatic sliding gate is operating.

They are suitable for FAAC sliding gate installations including compatible FAAC 740 and FAAC 741 automation systems.

FAAC XP 20D for Swing Gates

FAAC XP 20D photocells can also be used with compatible automatic swing gate systems. Depending on the gate geometry and risk assessment, one or more photocell pairs may be installed to monitor appropriate areas around the moving gate leaves.

Correct positioning is especially important on swing gates because the leaves travel through an arc rather than along a straight track.

FAAC XP 20D for Parking Barriers

The FAAC XP 20D can also provide infrared obstacle detection for compatible automatic parking barrier systems. Installed across the vehicle lane, the photocells can detect an obstruction and provide a safety input to the barrier controller.

FAAC XP 20D vs XP 20B D

Important: FAAC XP 20D and XP 20B D are different versions. The XP 20D uses a traditional 24V AC/DC transmitter and receiver connection, while the XP 20B D uses FAAC BUS 2easy technology. Always check the installed FAAC control board before ordering.
